Warm, damp weather forecast for coming months

Spring will be warm and wet, according to the the latest climate outlook report.

The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (Niwa) has predicted above-average temperatures, normal or above-normal rainfall and normal soil moisture levels and stream flows for Northland in the three months to November.

But short-term cold snaps- typical of spring - will still occur from time to time.

Niwa principal scientist climate variability and change Dr James Renwick said above-average temperatures meant above 15C during spring and even higher during summer.

"The farming community will be reasonably happy but it won't be so good for those getting into outdoor activities," he said.

Rural Support Trust co-ordinator Helen Moodie said the climate outlook was wonderful news for the farming community because wet and warm weather was ideal for pasture growth.

The trust helps rural communities respond to adverse climate conditions.

According to Niwa's outlook, there's a 50 per cent chance that temperatures will be above average, 30 per cent near average and a 20 per cent chance of being below average.

The probability of rainfall is 40 per cent above and near average and 20 per cent below average.
