Two men were charged with assault with intent to injure after allegedly punching and stomping another man during a weekend which kept police busy with violent, night-time incidents in central Whangarei.

After a stand-off between two men in the middle of Vine St in the early hours of yesterday morning, one man allegedly punched the other to the ground, sat on him and bashed him until being restrained by onlookers. At that point the second offender ran across the road and started stomping on the victim who lay injured on the ground.

The police arrested two men aged 21 and 23 years old.

Seven people were arrested on Friday night for various incidents and on Saturday night five people were arrested for separate incidents of fighting, one of them a woman.
