Peak afternoon traffic was disrupted in central Whangarei on Tuesday after workers constructing an extra lane accidentally snapped a gas pipe.

Three fire trucks and police were at the junction of Central Ave and Western Hills' Drive about 3pm as traffic queued up from the Manse St junction.

Police helped with traffic control, particularly at the Selwyn Rd entrance, while firefighters helped gas supplier Vector to isolate the leak and carry out repairs.

No one was affected by the leak.

Workers contracted to the New Zealand Transport Agency were working on an extra lane by Mander Park.
