The kindness of strangers ...

The kindness of strangers means a little girl once again has a special friend to share the good times and the bad.

Last weekend, the Northern Advocate ran the story of Tishan Edmonds, 8, who has a rare form of cancer and whose much-loved little dog had recently been run over.

The response to that story and the generosity of people wanting to help  Tishan get another pet was heartwarming.

This week, the Edmonds family was able to pick up an adorable 14-week-old shih tzu-Japanese spitz cross gifted to Tishan from Lady Gays Pet Centre in Takapuna. "Thank you", was about all shy little Tishan could say when the Advocate  visited her yesterday, and it was more than enough.

It was plain to see she and the cute bundle of fluff she has called Simba are already best mates.

Tishan's mother Shelly Edmonds said the puppy  was very well behaved, calm and affectionate - "He's just perfect for her."

Tishan was so distressed to lose her pet, Pumba, a few weeks ago she couldn't eat for days.

The shih tzu had been given to her over a year ago to keep her spirits high as she underwent treatment, which often included spells in Auckland's Starship children's hospital. Tishan had given up the outdoorsy sports and play activities she loved and needed a companion.

Following our story, more than $200 in donations - some sent anonymously - came into the Advocate's office to help fund the things puppies need.

One special gift we were asked to pass on was a handmade soft toy dog, made especially for Tishan.

As the Advocate set about costing de-sexing, registration, vaccination and micro-chipping - expenses a new puppy brings - we were again touched by the help offered.

Environment Northland manager Keith Thompson  donated the registration and micro-chipping. The SPCA has offered the neuter operation, second-stage vaccinations and worm and flea treatments.

Daniel Dunbar, owner of Whangarei Store Pet Essentials, came to the party with a care package that included toys, bedding, leads, treats and puppy food.

The cash donations will be given to the Edmonds family in the form of vouchers to provide for Simba.

The Northern Advocate would like to thank all those people who helped cure a little girl's broken heart. It will make coping with her illness so much easier for her.
