Te Ahu complex proves a real hit

Even before the first sod was turned Kaitaia's Te Ahu civic complex was touted as a surefire tourist attraction, and so it has proved according to Te Ahu Trust general manager Mark Osborne.

The complex had now been open for almost a year, he said last week, and still people were arriving from far and wide to check it out.

Last week's visitors included around 80 Mangonui School pupils, who showed particular interest in the library, museum and cinema.

Mr Osborne said he received many positive comments about the centre from the teachers and children (46 of whom joined the library before they went home).

"About a third of the group had never been to Te Ahu, but planned on making a further visit," he said, adding that most weeks featured at least one school group. Some asked for tours that would help them understand the kaupapa of Te Ahu, which were happily provided whenever possible.
