Surf lifesaving: Waipu hosting top lifesaving action

With clear skies predicted, Waipu Cove looks like it's the place to be tomorrow as the surf lifesaving Northern Region team comes to town as part of a transtasman tri-series.

The Northern Region team includes three Northlanders, who are now competing for Auckland-based clubs, with Cole Drinnan, Hannah Williams and Dylan French all making the cut.

Northern Region coach Simone Spencer said the trio were a talented bunch who had the opportunity to experience some relentless competition during the three-test series which kicks off at 9am.

"All of them have represented Northern Region and Auckland in the past," said Spencer. "Cole and Hannah were both in the under-14 team that won the national provincial championships last year.

"The Australians always come over here wanting to give it heaps and they're really tough competitors. For our guys it's often a really good learning experience because they don't get that relentless experience all the time, which is common in Australia."

Spencer said French, who is from Whangarei and first competed for Ruakaka but now is with Red Beach, had been involved with Auckland and Northern Region for a number of years and was part of the team which went to Australia last year to compete in the same tri-series.

Drinnan and Williams, both from Mangawhai, were lucky to qualify for selection due to their age but have shown throughout 2012 they were consistent performers, Spencer said.

The competition over three or four hours included a variety of events which would be pushed through quickly so there was always something new happening, he said.
