A Whangarei woman has been ordered to stay away from her partner and to cool down after she allegedly threw a brick at the man's vehicle in a dispute over money.

Sergeant John Larkin, of Whangarei police, said the woman and her partner were at home about 9pm on Tuesday when they got into a row. The woman had allegedly thrown a brick at the man's vehicle.

Although no complaint was made to police, they issued her with a Police Safety Order (PSO), also known as a "cooling down" order, compelling her to stay away from the property. The orders, part of the Domestic Violence Amendment Act 2009, protect domestic-violence victims by giving police power to order someone they suspect may be abusive to stay away for up to five days from someone who may be in danger.
