Twenty thousand dollars worth of prizes is up for grabs at this year's Northland Field Days.

For the first time ever, two big prize packs - worth more than $20,000 combined - have been sponsored and will be offered as gate prizes to patrons of the three-day event, kicking off on March 1 at the Northland Field Days site in Dargaville.

Some of the big ticket items include a quad bike donated by Rouse Motorcycles, a kayak, a portable hot house and a portable 5000-litre water tank.

The packages will be offered as a rural gate prize to farmers and a lifestyler prize, available to anyone.

Lew Duggan, Northland Field Days president, was stunned by the generosity of companies in what is essentially an experiment by the organisation.

"I am blown away by what people from the community have been prepared to give," said Mr Duggan.

"There are some very special businesses out there who are more than happy to share their good fortune."

People interested in the rules and contents of the gate prize can see exactly what is up for grabs online at http://www.northlandfielddays.co.nz/.

Mr Duggan said the prize packs were part of what he expected to be an action-packed event.

"I think we could be looking at a record-breaking attendance this year," said Mr Duggan.
