Shooting: Young gun wins bronze

Watch out New Zealand shooting champions, Whangarei has a genuine up-and-coming shooting star in its ranks.

Sixteen-year-old shooting ace Mason Reed came out of the blue to win a medal in the men's trap shooting.

Whangarei Boys High School's Reed, who was named ASB Secondary School Sports Awards sportsman of the year in November, won his bronze medal on Saturday in what was being dubbed the Super Saturday for young athletes.

Northland golfing maestro Sean Masters will need to improve drastically if he is to come close to the medals at the Youth Olympic Festival in Australia.

Masters has recorded second and third round scores of 79 and 73 to sit five over par and 20th overall. Earlier Masters had sat comfortably in fifth position after a first round three under par score. Fellow Northland golfer Kadin Neho has been steady after a first round seven over par shocker. Neho didn't have an ideal start as he scored 79 but has since recorded two rounds of 73 to sit second-to-last with a nine over par total.

Swimmer Melita Raravula wrapped up her Youth Olympic campaign with a time of 1:04.37 in the 100m butterfly. Earlier Raravula finished in eighth place in the 200m butterfly final with a time of 2min 23.66sec, just over two seconds slower than her heat time. Raravula also finished eighth in her heat with a time of 5min 20.87sec in the 400m individual medley.
