Second accident on SH1
Two people in a car that crashed off the road at Waiomio, 5km south of Kawakawa, walked away with minor injuries. Police and a crew of volunteer firefighters from Kawakawa were called about 2.15pm yesterday. On Sunday, a head-on collision just south of the Towai pub closed State Highway 1 for about two hours.
Hikurangi Senior Constable Russell Rawiri said a northbound van with two children on board and a southbound car, with two elderly people, crashed. Both vehicles were extensively damaged and five people were taken to hospital.
