Race to finish mosaic chair
A mosaic chair taking shape on the Paihia waterfront is the tourist town's latest volunteer beautification project.
Focus Paihia community trust volunteers spent last weekend adding hundreds of broken tiles, coins and shells to the seat just north of the town wharf.
The seaward side is land-themed and decorated with native birds and plants, such as the kukupa and harakeke, while the landward side depicts the sea and its creatures.
Project driver Robyn Parker said she hoped the seat would be ready in time for Paihia's Christmas parade on December 13, with volunteers due to complete the grouting and attach the seats this week.
Twelve key volunteers had worked on the seat over the past six weeks, with the concrete form made by Kawakawa artist Matthew Nisbet and the mosaic designed by Paihia's Shelly Wilson.
