New church president
Former Dargaville bank manager and now Methodist minister Reverend Rex Nathan has been inducted as President of the Methodist Church of New Zealand at a recent service at St Paul's Cathedral in Wellington. Having served a year as president elect, Rev Nathan will now take on the two year role as president. After he moved to Dargaville as a young boy, Mr Nathan spent 46 years in the banking industry - 23 of those as the manager of the ANZ Bank in Dargaville.
Kaipara's cinemas
A book written by a former Ruawai man titled "Theatres of Dargaville and Surrounding Areas" will be officially launched at the Dargaville Museum today. Written by Brent Scott, who now lives in Auckland, the book covers a time period between 1911 to 1994 when the last of the theatres - The Empire - closed its doors. At one stage the district boasted cinemas at Ruawai, Te Kopuru and three at Dargaville - The Royal, The Cozy and The Empire. Often the focal point of the district, the cinemas also hosted other events and many a couple's first date was a trip to the 'pictures'.
