Toll dodger fined
The New Zealand Transport Agency says the sentencing of a driver who failed to pay more than $5000 in tolls on the Northern Gateway Toll Road sends a clear message to others who evade toll payments. Robert Masaberg from Snells Beach, north of Auckland, was convicted in the North Shore District Court of 20 charges of failing to pay a toll and ordered to pay $1156 in fines, court and prosecution costs. An NZTA spokeswoman said charges sent a clear message to others who evade making toll payments.
New home for cadet unit
The Mangawhai Cadet Unit, the country's newest cadet corps, is moving into its own premises this Saturday. Cadet Forces is a voluntary military-style training organisation for Kiwi youth aged 13 to 18, run in a partnership between the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) and local community organisations. For years, Mangawhai-based cadets commuted to Whangarei, but in 2008 two officers established a local base. Then last year the unit was offered the old bowling club building. After months of renovations, which included getting a new roof, drainage, gutting the inside, rewiring and repainting, the building is now ready. The opening ceremony is at 2pm, 733 Settlement Road, Mangawhai.
