Motorsport: Speed thrills on slick track

Whangarei Speedway has the longest straights of dirt tracks in Northland, which means more speed, but, as many drivers found out, the bends are a force to be reckoned with.

A slick track on the weekend also posed another challenge for drivers at the Northland Championships as cars slid all over the track. Luckily, most drivers had a few years' experience under their belts and managed to contain the carnage.

Taipa's strong driving community saw nearly half of the trophies head north for this season as Daniel DeWaal drove like a demon as usual to take out the C Grade Championship, Roy Walker won the Limited Saloon title, and Carol Teixeira won the Mixed Grade section in her Super Production Saloon.

Dale Emm came in second for C Grade. Husband and wife Rex and Didi Roycroft managed to hold onto their last season's title as Ladies and Mens' Production championship respectively.
