Drivers from all over Northland tested out Whangarei's speedway track last weekend ahead of the Northland Championships in December.

The Port Road track's long straights meant drivers have to go faster or be left on the starting grid with cars regularly clocking well over 100km/h - while still navigating around the tight corners at each end.

Captain of the New Zealand Ministock Team Luke Brown was churning up the track all day in preparation for the Trans-Tasman Challenge in Auckland next year.

New Production Saloon driver Grant Renall was narrowly beaten by ex- champions Rex Roycroft and Robin Grieve - Renall's No10 Commodore is certainly one to watch.
