Migrants to be given insight on Treaty
New migrants to Whangarei can learn about the Treaty of Waitangi - thanks to a free workshop organised by Settlement Support.
The workshop, to be held on Monday at the Whangarei Migrant Centre, is expected to give attendees an understanding of the Treaty and its importance to New Zealand.
"Our country is based on bi-culturalism, rather than multi-culturalism, and this leaves some migrants wondering where they fit in," said Settlement Support co-ordinator Ellen Altshuler.
She said newcomers to New Zealand read about current issues like water rights, recent settlement agreements and Maori representation in local and central government and wondered what those had to do with the Treaty, she said.
"The seminar will help migrants make the connection between New Zealand's history, the signing of the Treaty and how it relates to issues in the present," Ms Altshuler said.
The workshop will be led by Moea Armstrong, who has facilitated Treaty and anti-racism meetings in Northland since 1991.
