Far North rural residents with concerns about rates hikes can voice these at a meeting in Okaihau

Far North rural residents concerned about proposed rates hikes can express their views, and organise opposition to the plans, at a public meeting in Okaihau on Tuesday.

The Far North District Council has proposed changing the way it calculates rates as part of its long term plan, from a district-wide flat rate for services such as roads and sewerage to charging according to the actual cost of services used.

The proposal would see rates drop in some areas such as Kaitaia and Kaikohe, while rising sharply for some sectors (especially forestry) and for those in costly sewerage schemes, such as Hihi, Russell and Kaeo.

The meeting is at Okaihau Hall, Settlers Way, Okaihau, from 11am on Tuesday and speakers include representatives from the rural community and FNDC.
