A man who spat at police was convicted and sentenced to 150 hours' community work when he appeared in the Dargaville District Court last Friday.

On September 26, Kahu Meeuws White, 18, of Dargaville was stopped by police for riding a bike without a helmet and for riding on a footpath. He admitted the incident had involved "to-ing and fro-ing" but claimed racial slurs had sparked his behaviour. Judge Duncan Harvey said: "You acted like a prat. Spitting at a police officer is unbelievable."

Meeuws White was fined $100 and ordered to pay court costs of $132.89 on each charge. He was also convicted and discharged on a charge of behaving offensively.
