Kawakawa police have apprehended a man in his 30s who is believed to have fired off about five shots at an address on the edge of the Bay of Islands town about 3pm yesterday.

The gunshots were discharged at a Kawakawa house and police believe there was at least one other person on the property.

The shots did not cause any injuries and it is understood the alleged gunman fled the scene in a vehicle immediately after the shots were fired.

Within two hours, officers had found the 34-year-old male, who was from the area and known to police.

He was being interviewed at Kawakawa Police Station yesterday evening. Police had also recovered a firearm.
