Jail for 'stupid' drink driver

He knew it was a stupid mistake to drive after drinking, now a Northland man is serving 11 months in jail for his fifth drinking conviction.

Mahanga Marsh PEIHOPA, 42, appeared for sentencing in the Whangarei District Court on a charge of driving with excess breath alcohol for a third or subsequent time after he was stopped by police on Otaika Rd, Whangarei, at 9.30pm on November 24, 2011.

A test showed he had a level of 779 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath, almost twice the 400mcg limit.

In explantation to police, Peihopa said it was a stupid mistake to drive again after drinking.

He was sentenced to 11 months' jail and disqualified from driving for 12 months and one day for his fifth drink-driving conviction.
