Just fine for a holiday

Leslee Whittaker was among the hundreds of Whangarei people who used the fine Anniversary Day weather yesterday to relax with family. She took her daughters Eve, 5 (left), Ruby, 22 months, and Ashleigh, 9, to the Onerahi waterfront for a picnic.

Meanwhile, despite the sunshine, crowd numbers were low at Whangarei district beaches yesterday, with surf lifesaving club officials reporting only about 150 using the beach at Mangawhai and Waipu Cove, 130 at Ruakaka and only 32 at Whangarei Heads around 4pm.

Lifeguards said the water was warm but a cold onshore wind gusting up to 30 knots made conditions unpleasant.

No rescues were reported over the long weekend.
