Dedicated duo call time on careers

At the end of the school year Tauraroa Area School will say goodbye to Mr and Mrs Eve, two teachers who have 50 years of teaching experience at the school between them.

Mrs Eve has taught at the school for 28 years. She started her career as a music and social studies teacher and became part of the senior management team in 2008. In 2010 she became deputy principal.

Current deputy principal Danny Jewell said "Joan epitomises the best of New Zealand's teachers - truly professional, dedicated and willing to do whatever she can for the benefit of her students."

Joan's husband Chris was principal from 1990 to 2002 before becoming the Northland manager of the Ministry of Education. Mr Eve returned to the school in 2009 where he has taught chemistry and mathematics, as well as assisted with information and communications technologies and daily relief organisation.

"He is a natural as a teacher, ... he has made a huge impact in the lives of his students," principal Grant Burns said.

Mr and Mrs Eve started dating at Kamo High School, and their careers have taken them to the South Island and the Cook Islands before taking their roles at Tauraroa Area School.

Mr Jewell said the Eves will be missed by staff and students.
