A Whangarei family home was extensively damaged after a fire started in the front of the Housing New Zealand property.

Firefighters and St John ambulance crews were called to the William Jones Drive house about 8.30pm yesterday (Tuesday).

No on e was injured and it's believed two adults and three children live at the house.

The fire crews were at the scene for nearly three and a half hours ensuring there were no hotspots.

Two fire safety officers were at the scene early today looking at the charred remains and trying to determine how the blaze began. A team of police detectives were also in the street interviewing residents.

A neighbouring home just five metres away was lucky not to catch fire and the heat melted a section of plastic guttering.
