Youthful Joyriders led police on a long, low-speed pursuit while vomiting out of a stolen car last night.

Average speeds during the pursuit were 45km/h as the cars navigated narrow roads in rural Northland, Inspector Willie Taylor said.

"A group of youths had taken a car. And they were throwing empty cans and boxes out of the vehicle...and a couple of the occupants were leaning out being sick."

The pursuit lasted almost two hours and took in the scenic countryside between Kaikohe and Dargaville.

"It takes a while to get a car that can put some spikes out to bring it all to an end," Inspector Taylor said.

Six juveniles were apprehended.
