Athletics: The only way is up for Gregory

UNLIMITED POTENTIAL: Northland's Scott Gregory will be seeking medals this weekend as ASB Arena hosts its first senior competition.

Even though he doesn't quite match up size wise next to his opponents, Northland's Scott Gregory still foots it with the best of them.

The 13-year-old is described by Athletics Whangarei coach Chris Portch as having more potential than you'd think when you see him line up.

"There's no questioning his potential," said Portch. "He has serious prospects as a multi-eventer, a decathlete essentially."

Gregory, competing at the North Island Colgate Games in Inglewood last weekend, showed his versatility, and improving technical skills, by taking two silver medals in the field and recording a personal best in the 80m hurdles, finishing fourth in the final.

Gregory produced a throw of 36.30m in the discus to capture the silver medal after last season breaking an Athletics Northland record in the same event. His second silver came in the shotput event after throwing 10.52m.

Hampered by a knee injury which limited his best performance to 4.70m, Gregory was unable to defend the long jump title he won last year.

This weekend Gregory will compete in the Athletics Auckland meeting which is being held at Whangarei's ASB Arena on Saturday.
