Drifting and karting planned for streets

A go-kart and drifting demonstration is being planned to coincide with the upcoming International Rally of Whangarei to promote "a motorsport weekend" in the city.

The brainchild of the CBD action group, the demonstrations are aimed at providing an alternative  for those who cannot watch the rally.

Group member and Whangarei District Councillor Vince Cocurullo, who  canvassed businesses  last week, said there was major support for the event.

"It's all about trying to make it a motorsport weekend," Mr Cocurullo said.

"Those who cannot watch the rally can enjoy other stuff in town."

The demonstrations will be held on the last day of the two-day International Rally of Whangarei, which runs between July 3 and July 4.

The organisers are seeking approval to shut off  several streets in central Whangarei for the demonstrations.

The circuit would begin at Carruth St, beside Pak 'n' Save, up to the roundabout and into Reyburn, and return to base via Walton St.

The Rally of Whangarei will use roads around Waipu and Paparoa, while also featuring special stages at Pohe Island.

Thousands flocked to the annual event last year, ploughing an estimated $5 million revenue into the city.

As rally drivers churned up excitement on the tracks, spectators and media from as far afield as France, Canada and Singapore helped boost the region's coffers.

Whangarei retailers last year said the rally was not only a fantastic event, it was also of significant benefit to the region.
